This local saint’s full name is San Fermin de Amiens (birth name Firminus). Born in the 3rd century, he was the son of a Roman senator in Pamplona. Fermin converted to Christianity and traveled widely, inspiring many with his eloquence and zeal. He was made the first Bishop of Pamplona at the young age of 24 and met martyrdom at age 31 in Amiens, France where he was beheaded in 257AD.
His association with the now famous Running of the Bulls is coincidence. In the spirit of the current festival, there is a story circulating that Fermin was dragged by a bull to his death, however this brutal martyrdom actually belonged to San Cernin (Saturninus), disciple of the apostle Peter, and according to tradition, the baptizer of San Fermín.
