    Navarra has a variety of tasty, traditional food.  The area is famous for its agriculture and the influence of Basque, Arab and French cultures has resulted in some delicious food and drink.  Below are some of the most celebrated food and drink of Navarra:

    Asparagus: fat and white, with a tender texture and mild flavor, this asparagus is prepared in a variety of ways. You'll see it incorporated in many pinchos.

    Artichoke: Navarra's "alcachofas" are featured in many typical dishes. Be sure to try the varied recipes that use this flavorful vegetable.

    Pimiento de Piquillo: this deep red, heart-shaped pepper has a full, savory flavor and is served stuffed with bacalao (cod) or as a garnish with meat.  The most famous pimientos are from Lodosa.

    Veal: The "ternera de Navarra" is famous throughout Spain for it's high quality.  Enjoy these local fillets or steaks in almost any restaurant or bar.

    Cheese: This region of Spain has many celebrated cheeses.  The two most famous are from Roncal and from Idiazabal.  The best cheese from Roncal is made from sheep's milk and aged.  It can be eaten with membrillo (quince paste) as a typical dessert.

    Cuajada: this sheeps milk yogurt is thick and mild.  It is a typical rustic dessert, eaten with honey.

    Wine: Navarra has some excellent red (tinto) and white (blanco) wines, however it is most famous for its award-winning rosés (rosados).  Be sure to try wine made from the local garnacha grapes.

    Pacharán: Also spelled patxaran, this regional liqueur is world-famous.  It  is made with anise and sloe berries (blackthorn berries).  Pour it cold on ice for a delicious after-dinner drink.


    Below is a list of the top ten must-know food-related words.
    1. Pincho (pintxo) - any of a variety of gourmet snacks served at every bar, typical of Navarra.
    2. Pacharan (Patxarán) - the celebrated liqueur of Navarra, made from blackthorn berries and anise
    3. Chistorra (Txistorra) - a bright red sausage, typical of the Basque Country
    4. Calimocho (Kalimotxo) - Wine mixed with Coca-Cola. Very popular.
    5. Carajillo - coffee with cognac or whisky
    6. Caldico - a typical soup broth, usually taken early in the morning to regain strength after the long night
    7. Tortilla de Patata - this egg and potato omlette typical all over Spain.
    8. Churros - deep-fried strips of dough, usually eaten with chocolate or coffee.
    9. Zurracapote - sweet fruit juices and wine (similar to sangria)
    10. Bocadillo - any of various typical sandwiches.
