Encierro
Fifth EncierroUpdated event: 11/7/2009 a las 08:30 horas
The bulls stayed together at the beginning of the encierro, however one bull took the lead as they ran up the slope of Santo
Domingo and through the narrower alley. At the
entrance to the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, the bull in the lead hit a runner. The race
lasted two minutes and 52 seconds.
The fifth running of the bulls featured toros from the ranch of Dolores Aguirre
(Sevilla). The run proved exciting and despite a bull getting
separated from the herd after the curve of Mercaderes, no one received
a horn wound. The day after the death of the young Jimeno
Daniel Romero, even more runners crowded into the course today,
coinciding with the start of the weekend, the most popular time for visitors to come to the festival of San Fermin. Despite the crowds, the
bulls completed the run in a swift two minutes and fifty-two seconds.
After singing the traditional song three times, asking the saint for protection,
the bulls were released at 8:00am and soon a black Burraco bull (with a grey and white backside markings), began to lag behind.
At the famous curve before Estafeta street, the lagging bull slipped
and fell, increasing the distance between him and the rest of the
herd. This lagging bull opened up the pack of bulls and steers for the
runners to take advantage of the space to run with them into the bull
ring where they were quickly locked up in their corral.
Meanwhile, the lagging bull walked as the pastores hit young men who
tried to get too close to it. However, one reckless youth ran toward
the bull's head, catching its attention and he received repeated
attacks but no horn wounds.
This last bull finally entered the plaza without further incident and was herded to the corral.
